Obituary Writing Template

Here is a helpful suggestion on how to write an obituary for your loved one. Remember that an obituary is typically 2-3 paragraphs about your loved one that you want others to learn/remember, but it can be longer if you wish. All of these are optional - share as much or as little as you wish.


Paragraph 1

  • Full name (Nickname)
  • Date and place of birth
  • Parents
  • Date & location of passing
  • Graduated from: school name and year

Paragraph 2

  • Name of spouse (year of marriage and place they met)
  • Work experience
  • Military experience
  • Hobbies or how he/she liked spending time
  • Affiliations (church, groups, etc)
  • Quirks
  • Personality traits that stand out
  • How most people would describe them

Paragraph 3

  • Preceded in death by (Closest to furthest relationship)
  • Survived by (spouse, children, parents, siblings, # of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren)
