Obituary

Sharon Elizabeth Massey

Sherry Massey of Dallas was born July 5, 1940, and left this earthly world on May 22, 2023, with her godson Ryan Hilscher by her side.
Sherry was adopted at the age of seven by Mr. and Mrs. Joel Steed and grew up in Mt. Pleasant, Texas. She never knew her biological
parents.
Sherry attended Texas Women's University and attained her bachelor's degree from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M
Commerce). In 1962 Sherry married her next-door neighbor, Lynwood Massey, with whom she had grown up. Actually, she married him twice. They eloped, and when her mother found out, they were not allowed to date until after the big formal wedding her mother insisted on having.
Sherry found her way to Lancaster High School where she taught English for many years and also sponsored the National Honor
Society. Former students have commented that she was their favorite teacher and was a wonderful English teacher. One commented that
she felt fortunate to have had her touch her life. Another commented that she was a very special lady.
Sherry was definitely special and truly unique. She made an impression on everyone she met. Her heart for service affected many. She helped struggling young teachers as well all her friends. It didn't matter if you were having a garage sale or moving, Sherry
was there to help and usually brought Lyn along also. She was a great counselor for issues of the heart also. After she retired from
Lancaster High School in 1998, she spent many many hours volunteering at the Lancaster Outreach Center. When she moved to the senior facility in Dallas a few years ago, she continued to help her new friends there in any way she could Sherry was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband Lyn, and her adopted son Chip, who died in a tragic motorcycle accident in 1985. His death was something she never recovered from. No parents do. What a reunion they must be having!
She is survived by her godson, Ryan Hilscher, cousin Julia McKelvy, cousins by marriage Bill Lane and Jim Lane. She also considered her
close teacher friends her family: Mary Maddox, Judy Thornton, Linda McClary, and Paula Russell.

Until the end, Sherry enjoyed having a glass of wine or a good margarita with these ladies.

The family would like to thank Three Oaks Hospice Care for their excellent, caring assistance in Sherry's last days.

She will buried near her husband and son in a private graveside service at West Hill Memorial Cemetery in Sherman, Texas, on May
26, 2023.
