Sam Franklin Strayhorn Jr. was born on April 29, 1952, to parents Sam Franklin Strayhorn, Sr. and Rosa Lee Jones in Little Rock, Arkansas. He grew up in a close-knit community where he learned the values of hard work and perseverance. After high school, he was drafted into the Army, where he graduated from basic training and completed two intensive tours in Vietnam. During his service, Sam worked as a medevac, providing critical care to injured soldiers and demonstrating immense bravery and dedication.
Upon returning home, Sam pursued his passion for nursing, enrolling in a nursing program while managing the responsibilities of family life. He married and became a devoted father to his four children: Daniel, Elizabeth, Samantha, and Carol, juggling the demands of being a full-time student and an involved parent. After earning his nursing degree, he embarked on a fulfilling career in healthcare, working across various hospital settings and within hospice care, where he provided compassionate support to individuals and families during their most challenging times.
While working at Vitas Hospice, Sam's life took a new turn when he found love again after his divorce. He created a blended family reminiscent of the beloved "Brady Bunch," bringing together families and hearts filled with laughter and warmth. Known for his charisma and quirky sense of humor, Sam genuinely cared about others, taking an active interest in their dreams and aspirations, and always striving to uplift those around him.
Sam's unwavering kindness and generous spirit touched the lives of many, and his legacy of love and compassion will forever inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. Sam is survived by his wife Geneva, brother and sister Dewayne and Annette, children: Daniel, Samantha, Elizabeth, Carol, Rickey, Danielle, Toni, Gemar, and Jamie, and a slew of nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. He will truly be missed by family, friends, and the community he served.
A memorial service to honor his life will be held at Jeter & Son Chapel at 10:00 a.m. on August 15, 2025, followed by inurnment at Dallas -Fort Worth National Cemetery at 11:15 AM.
