Rosario "Chayo" Acuña Hinojosa
With great sorrow, the family of Rosario "Chayo" Acuña Hinojosa announces her death on Thursday July 11, 2024 in Plano, Texas at the age of 88 after a brief illness.
Rose was born and raised in Corpus Christi and was a devout Catholic. She graduated from Incarnate Word Academy in 1954. She enjoyed the friendships she made while serving as president of the Hi-Fairnessee Girls Club in 1954, one of the oldest continually operating Hispanic girls' clubs in the country. She also served as vice president of the Selene Club in 1955, a group of young junior college students. Trained as an LVN from Del Mar College, she served as a school nurse with the Corpus Christi Independent School District for several years.
Always with a playful sense of humor, she liked being silly and making others laugh. Rose was also an avid and knowledgeable sports fan who kept up with several sports. In later years, she enjoyed watching golf with her husband and son-in-law, but her favorite was track and field. She attended two Track & Field Olympic Team Trials and several other notable track meets. She rooted for the Houston Astros, the San Antonio Spurs, and always cheered for the Dallas Cowboys, usually coaching from her living room. She would have delighted in hearing the Olympic theme music this summer, watching the Games, and cheering on the athletes.
Survivors include her beloved husband of 67 years Carlos Hinojosa, three sons Juan Carlos "Chuck" (Marie), Eddie (Isabel), and Jeff (Julie Thomas) and two daughters Alicia and Michelle (Jeff Kennedy), three grandchildren Linda, Julian and Jason, great-grandchild Sofia, her sister Delia Secades (Vicente) and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her father Plutarco Curiel Acuña, her mother Olivia LaRue Acuña, and four elder siblings Amelia Gomez (Alfonso), Olivia Rodriguez (Pete), Plutarco Acuña (Elida) and Oscar Acuña (Goldie).
Visitation will be held on July 24th at 1:30 pm in the chapel at St Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Plano, Texas. A rosary will be recited at 2:00 pm. Funeral mass will follow at 2:30 pm in the church sanctuary. Private family burial services will be on July 25th at the DFW National Cemetery.
