Obituary

Norma Ruth (Billy) Ortiz was born on February 25, 1942, and reunited with her beloved husband, Albert Ortiz, on August 28, 2022. She was born in Broken Bow, Oklahoma and lived most of her life in Dallas, Texas.

She was proud member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma She graduated from Sequoyah-Native American Boarding School and later completed her education at Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas.

She met her future husband, Albert Ortiz, while attending Haskell. Norma's good friend, Isnie Ortiz, was married to Albert's twin brother, Gilbert Ortiz, and made the introductions. They married on November 21, 1964, in Dallas, Texas and began a beautiful family. She is survived by her children Lisa Ortiz (Mariya Ortiz), Christopher Ortiz, Sr. (Karen Ortiz), and Jason Ortiz; Grandsons Christopher Ortiz, Jr., Macarian Ortiz, and Jayden (Kiana Jordan). One precious great granddaughter Ava Evfaye Ortiz. Sisters Sharon Battiest and Julia Billy. Numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Albert Ortiz, parents Julius and Susie Billy, sisters Dorothy Cunningham & Ruth Battiest, and brothers Wilbert Billy and Wilkin Billy.

She moved to Dallas as part of the Relocation Program for employment purposes. Norma had strong work ethic that included employment with various companies in the Dallas area: Taylor Publishing Company, Sears & Roebuck and J.C. Penney. She supported various Native American businesses, organizations, and churches in the community. Norma enjoyed opportunities to fellowship with members of Dallas Indian Revival Center and Dallas Indian Mission United Methodist Church. The Silver Feathers and UM Women Ministry groups were especially close to her heart.

Her favorite pastimes over 80 years of life included sewing, dancing, listening to "oldies but goodies" or classic rock music, spending time with family & friends, and cheering for her favorite sports teams: Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks and Oklahoma Sooners ("Boomer"). She also loved Elvis Presley, Roger Staubach, Dirk Nowitski, and Luka Dončić.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Jeter & Son Funeral Home located at 4830 West Illinois Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75211.

Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2022 at 10:30 A.M. at Dallas Indian Mission United Methodist Church located at 1203 Hollywood Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75208. Interment to follow at Calvary Hill Cemetery in Dallas, Texas at 1:30 P.M.

A reception after the burial will be held at Dallas Indian Mission United Methodist Church.
