Martha Jane Payne Garland, 84, was a devoted wife, daughter, sister, aunt, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend who went to be with our Lord on June 25, 2022. She was born December 31, 1937 to Ray & Minnie Vera Payne in Dallas, TX.
Martha graduated from Sunset High School in 1956 and attended East Texas State College in San Marcos, TX graduating with a teaching degree in 1960. While in college, she fell in love with the Spanish language and taught Spanish at Berkner High School in Richardson, TX. She went on to continue her education and received her Masters degree at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. She taught at Berkner for 31 years until she retired in 1991. Martha has attended Tyler Street United Methodist Church since birth and joined the church when she was 9 years old. She and her husband, Max have been faithful members of the Challenge Class since 1958. Martha enjoyed reading novels about history, attending bible study, day trips to small towns, and going to Walmart! She was a little go-getter, very rarely sitting down. Her favorite color was yellow and she just adored lady bugs.
She is preceded in death by her father, Ray Payne, mother, Minnie V. Payne, and brother, Malcolm Ray Payne, Sr. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Max Foster Garland of Fairview, TX, Niece (adopted daughter), Robin Crowley and husband, Michael of Panama City Beach, FL. Nephew (adopted son), Malcolm Ray Payne, Jr. and wife, Juanita of Mesquite, TX. Grandchildren: Griffin, Gabrielle, Cody, Montana & wife Megan, Keith & wife, Robyn. Great Grandchildren: Raleigh, Audrey, Piper, Oaklee, Joe, Payslea, Chloe and one on the way.
The celebration of life service will be Saturday, July 2, 2022 at 3:00 pm with Rev. Mike Walker officiating. Visitation will begin at 2:00 pm. Flowers are appreciated or donations made to Tyler Street United Methodist Church, 927 W. Tenth St., Dallas, TX 75208.
