Obituary

Maria Villarreal

October 24, 1938 - January 28, 2023

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Maria Elena Villarreal, our loving mother, grandmother, and sister who has been a strong presence in our lives, on January 28, 2023. She passed away peacefully in her home at age 84 in Oak Cliff, Dallas, Texas. Born on October 24, 1938, in Guadalupe, Victoria, Durango, Mexico, but later moved to Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico. There she met her husband, Gilberto Villarreal Sr., and they were married and began a family. She found work as a seamstress and made clothes for her neighbors and children. In Piedras Negras, she and Gilberto were respected as a sharp business couple. In pursuit of a better life for their family, they then moved to Dallas, Texas, where they put down roots and continued to grow their family. Maria was a very strong, intelligent, resilient woman who raised seven children. She had a great love for family and was always in attendance for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren's accomplishments and life events. She always offered a smile and warm hug and never shied away from giving helpful advice. Her unconditional support and love are enduring and will be sorely missed. Maria is survived by her five children, Cesar Villarreal, Roxana Rosales, Luz Elena Villarreal, Alfredo Villarreal, and Lucia Almandarez. Her sisters Gloria Martinez, Dora Castillo, and brother Candelario Castorena. Also, 21 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Maria Elena Villarreal was preceded in death by her husband, Gilberto Villarreal Sr., brothers Ruperto & Alejandro Castorena, sister Raquel Cobarrubias, son Gilberto Villarreal Jr., and daughter Sandra Rodriguez.
