Julie McKinney Bown lived a life of remarkable service, unwavering productivity, and boundless adventure. She was a beacon of grace, intelligence, and compassion, touching the lives of many. Her sudden death on Easter Sunday morning has left a profound void in the hearts of all who knew her.
Julie's journey was marked by outstanding achievements both academically and professionally. Graduating Magna Cum Laude from Emory University with a BA, she pursued her passion for finance, earning her MBA from Georgia State University while working full-time as a litigation paralegal at King and Spalding. Her illustrious career led her to become both the youngest and first female vice-president of Salomon Brothers Inc in NYC, where she trained under the guidance of Michael Bloomberg. Her expertise also extended to Advanced Outdoor Landscape Inc and Private Trust and Estate Management in Dallas.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Julie's commitment to community service was unparalleled. She dedicated nearly three decades to the Master Gardener program in Dallas County, earning the esteemed title of Texas Master Gardener Emerita. Her leadership roles within the Dallas County Master Gardeners Association showcased her unwavering dedication to nurturing both gardens and community bonds.
Julie's philanthropic spirit extended far and wide, from her roles on the Dallas Animal Shelter Advisory Commission and various animal rescue organizations to her involvement in various community outreach programs and initiatives at First United Methodist Church Dallas. Her impact reached across borders, as she passionately participated in conservation projects around the globe with Earthwatch Inc.
An avid explorer, Julie's adventurous spirit knew no bounds. She crossed every continent, visiting iconic landmarks, car museums, national parks, and even made it to every Presidential Library in the USA. Her annual road trips and cruises with her beloved husband were cherished moments filled with joy and discovery.
Julie is survived by her devoted husband Robert Bown, brother Patrick McKinney, sister Virginia Josephson and her husband Joe, her stepdaughter Stacey McCool and partner Kent Hofstad, her grandchildren Hayden Hardesty, Connor Hardesty and his wife Jessica, her nieces Anna and Amelia Josephson, and a multitude of cherished friends. Her memory is also lovingly held by her beloved feline companions Gertie, Dexter, Ramboette, Scooter, and Speedy Boy.
Julie was preceded in death by her loving parents, Roald Yost McKinney and Clara Maxine Sturdivant and brother Russell McKinney.
A celebration of Julie's extraordinary life will be held on Thursday, April 11, 2024 at 10:00 AM at
First United Methodist Church, 1928 Ross Avenue, in Dallas. Valet Parking will be provided. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Julie's name to First United Methodist Church or Feral Friends - www.feralfriends.org
