James Maddux Jr.
May 18, 1929 - January 23, 2023
James Maddux, Jr. passed away at the age of 93 on January 23, 2023. James was born to James and Lorene Maddux on May 18, 1929 in Knippa, Texas. Shortly after graduating from high school, James enlisted in the United States Air Force and served as a medic during the Korean War. He served four years in the Air Force and then returned home to attend college on the GI bill. He attended Texas A&M, the University of Houston and eventually graduated from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State) with a Bachelor's degree in accounting.
Upon graduating from college, he moved to Odessa, Texas to start a new job and lived with his Aunt and Uncle (Cora and Howard Mankins). He started attending FBC, Odessa and it was there he met his wife of 66 years, Martha Wagnon. He and Martha lived in Odessa for well over 40 years and raised their family. They eventually moved to DeSoto, Texas to be close to family, specifically the grandchildren.
James led a quiet exemplary life and was most passionate about his Christian faith and sharing the gospel. He served as a Gideon, with Gideon's International and passed out thousands of Bibles during his 55+ years of service. He was ordained and served as a deacon at FBC, Odessa and later served as an active deacon at Hampton Road Baptist Church. He was also an active member of the DeSoto Lions Club. James loved serving others and giving back to his church and community and he will be truly missed.
James, fondly known as Papa, loved his four grandchildren, Matthew, Mallory, Nicholas, and Keely. He enjoyed and faithfully attended all the sporting events for Matthew and Nicholas and was always there to provide support and a word of encouragement. He loved attending all the school events for Mallory and Keely and enjoyed watching them perform in choir concerts and dance recitals. These precious grandchildren were his pride and joy.
James is survived by his wife Martha and two children, James Maddux III (Lisa) and Jennifer Covey (Brent). Grandchildren: Matthew Covey (Tara), Nicholas Covey (Ashley), Mallory Maddux and Keely Maddux. Great grandchildren: Quinn Covey and Benjamin James Covey due in May 2023. Also, many special nieces and nephews.
