George “Sonny” Alva Spurger Jr.
January 25, 1941 – November 13, 2025
George “Sonny” Alva Spurger Jr., born January 25, 1941, in Houston, Texas, went to be with the Lord and was reunited with his beloved Cindy on November 13, 2025, entering into the fullness of the faith he lived so deeply every day.
Sonny is survived by his two brothers, James “Richie” Spurger and Lou “Allen” Spurger; by his two sons, Scott Lee Spurger and Jon Mark Spurger and their wives Rachel Spurger and Corney Spurger; and by his granddaughter Kennedy McHugh Spurger.
Sonny lived by three pillars—God, Family, and Country—and he served each with unwavering dedication. As a Captain in the United States Air Force, he flew Caribou in Vietnam with courage and honor. His bravery was recognized with both the Bronze Star Medal and the Air Medal—testaments to his steadfast commitment to his fellow airmen and to the nation he loved.
While on leave from Vietnam, a simple request to drive the homecoming queen introduced him to his soulmate, Cindy—a love that would guide the rest of his life. He returned to Vietnam a different man—one whose heart had found its match and whose future had been forever shaped by the woman God placed in his path.
Their faith and love became the guiding strength for his life…
Together, Sonny and Cindy walked in faith and serving where God led them. Sonny devoted his life to serving mission churches—from the Texas border in Quemado to Lancaster —faithfully guiding countless people to the Lord, he then worked at the Baptist General Convention to heal hurting congregations and strengthen churches that needed support and renewal. Later, he poured his wisdom into the next generation as a professor at Dallas Baptist University, shaping young hearts and minds for ministry.
Sonny’s life was defined not by titles, but by service. He brought so many to the Lord—quietly, faithfully, and with the gentle strength of a man who lived what he preached.
To know Sonny was to witness humility, devotion, and unwavering faith. He walked through this world with purpose, guided by the call to serve. Today, we celebrate a servant of God who is now at peace in the presence of his Savior—reunited forever with Cindy.
The family deeply appreciates your love, prayers, and support. Please continue to lift them up as they walk through this season of grief. The family will gather privately to honor his life.
Sonny and Cindy Spurger are laid to rest at Dallas–Fort Worth National Cemetery
