Dorthy is the daughter of Coy and Daisy Yates. She was born on the back porch of the Yates family home in Dallas, Texas.
While growing up, she lived in Hutchins, Oak Cliff and Trinity Heights. She attended First Baptist Church of Hutchins, Edgemont Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Trinity Heights and Bethel Temple on Jefferson. Attended various elementary schools including Hutchins Elementary and Roger Q Mills Elementary. She attended Boude Story Junior High School. She graduated from W.H. Adamson High School. As a teenager, she worked as a cashier in various departments at Sanger Brothers Department Store in downtown Dallas and for the Lone Star Gas Company
until she became a homemaker.
She married Raymond Couie and had five children - Cecil, Bruce, Edward (Ed), Rebecca and Vickie. Her hobbies included yard work and embroidery. Dorthy loved to work outside in the yard pulling weeds, raking leaves, edging curbs and trimming trees. When she
turned 87 years old she was still working in the yard. Her mother taught her how to embroidery, She enjoyed outings with family, especially train shows, riding trains, visiting zoos/aquariums and eating at Whataburger. She is preceded in death by her father and mother, Coy and Daisy Yates;
brother, Robert Yates; daughter, Rebecca Couie; husband Raymond Couie.
She is survived by children: Cecil and Karen Couie, Bruce Couie, Ed Couie, Vickie and Todd Spivey; grandchildren Trey and Mikayla Spivey, Joseph (Joey) Spivey, Stephanie Dickerson, Caiden Couie, Charles Couie, Cooper Couie and Kayla Couie.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at Jeter & Son Funeral Home Chapel. Dallas, Texas. Funeral Service will be at 10 AM, Thursday, June 16, 2022 at the Funeral Home with a Graveside Service to follow at Myrtle Cemetery, Ennis, Texas.
