Obituary

Susan "Diane" McWhorter, was born on December 14, 1952 at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, TX to Hugh and Susan Lamar. The second of five children, she always took great joy and pride in her four siblings. She loved to reflect on her family times growing up in Longview, TX, calling them some of the best years of her life. One favorite memory was the "clubhouse" Diane and her siblings built in the city's sewer system and how it once caught on fire, forcing a rapid escape. This was a calamity she blamed on her brother, Michael, that remains to be confirmed. Moving to Dallas during her teens was traumatic for Diane, at first, but she quickly adapted, making friends with others who shared her faith.

In late 1972, she met a boy whom she barely liked and shared few interests with. Forced together by a friend who could only double date, Diane found herself with an unlikely fellow to spend one afternoon with, much less 50+ years, Leon McWhorter. Their discussions about faith, family, and friends unexpectedly led to a relationship no one saw coming.  After only six months of dating, she agreed to be his wife—a union many said would never last. When asked why they married so young, Leon would consistently respond: "Have you seen her? She is the most beautiful woman I've ever known. She said 'yes,' and I could not let her get away." Diane's response was often a shrug. The two were married on March 24, 1973. Their son, Michael Brian, was born in 1977, followed by their daughter, Elizabeth Diane, in 1985.

Diane worked for many years in the Oil & Gas industry but always said her life's ambition was to be a wife and mother. Her children, including Brian's wife, Brooke, were her greatest joys, followed closely by her grandchildren, Campbell and Reid. Her priorities were simple: faith, family, and friends. A mighty woman of prayer, Diane was the first stop for many when others had matters of need, happiness or celebration. She would drop everything to take a need to the Father and would continue to seek His wisdom until an answer was received. So many were blessed through her intercession.

Diane was preceded in death by her loving parents and is survived by five siblings: Michael Lamar (Sherri); Denise Putnam; Mark Lamar (Debbie); Stephen Lamar (Jane); Dixie Lamar; her sister-in-law, Ruth Ann Phelps; numerous nieces and nephews; and great-nieces/nephews, in addition to her husband, children and grandchildren.

There was a great celebration and reunion in Heaven on November 12, 2025 when Diane left this world to join that great cloud of witnesses and reunite with family gone before. She will be greatly missed and mourned, but earth could no longer hold this angel. The blessing of her life will carry us till we meet again. Fly on into your rest. The battle is over, and you have won! Thanks be to God!
