David Michael Johnson
1/26/1960 - 11/13/2023
David Michael Johnson was born in Dallas, Tx on January 26, 1960 to Florence Juanita Massey and Jessie Charles Johnson. He passed away with his wife of 42 years, Susan, by his side at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital on November 13, 2023 at the age of 63.
In David's case, when people say I'm sorry for your loss, we think of the gain we all had from being a part of his life. In the last few days we were not looking for a miracle because we knew that David's "Life" had been the miracle.
David was born with a heart condition. His parents divorced when they were young after having another child, Ted Johnson. Mom, Florence, and Dad, Jessie, both remarried giving him two more little brothers both nine years younger, James (Jimmy) A. Brewer and Joseph (Joey) D. Johnson.
His step dad was a colonel in the army, so they had many adventures in Washington, Virginia, Alaska, and Georgia. David and Ted came to Texas every summer and occasionally at Christmas. We all had a wonderful childhood at our grandparents farm house.
David was in the hospital in 1969 when he was visited by former President Dwight D Eisenhower. They had the same heart specialist. The president told David he was very brave and he gave him courage.
When he was 12, he had the heart of a 99 year old man, but no one could keep him down. He was always on a go cart or motorcycle jumping a fire. He snow skied and water skied. He loved hunting and fishing. He knew every word to every new song. He sang and danced. He and Ted were expert skaters on wheels and blades. He would take his brothers camping and motorcycle riding. You would never know he had a heart problem by his attitude. He LIVED.
His father was killed in a trucking accident when David was 16. But being a true Texan, once graduating high school and mechanics school in Georgia, he came back to Texas. He was driving a Mustang he and his father had built together. He got a job at Stuart and Stevenson as a diesel mechanic on big rigs.
He married Susan Elaine Sweetin on 4/11/1981. She never claimed he was an angel. Susan is the angel. With a daughter, Casey and a son, Jesse, she and David took Ted and his partner in when Ted was terminal (ironically with an undetected heart condition that went too far before diagnosed) and cared for him until his death. David knew Susan loved unconditionally. And that she would be there for him when the time came.
David eventually drove his own big-rig until his health forced him to retire early. He then became a very active Papa to his grandkids and enjoyed taking them to Dairy Queen. He later became very active in his beloved church, Westridge Fellowship. He had a servant's heart and enjoyed serving the church and others in need. He spent many Christmases serving the homeless with Big Heart Ministries.
David leaves behind his wife Susan Johnson, daughters Shana Beckett and Casey Brown, son Jesse Johnson and son-in-law Dion Brown, daughter-in-law Laci Johnson, grandchildren Dayla Brown, Jett Johnson, Max Johnson, Chaz Brown, Alexa Johnson and Enzo Beckett, brothers James Brewer and Joey Johnson and Sister-in-law Traci Johnson, along with niece Hali Osborn, nephew Logan Johnson and great-niece Amelia Osborn, as well as many beloved aunts, uncles and cousins. He is preceeded in death by his Father Jessie Johnson, brother Ted Johnson, Mother Florence Brewer, and Sister-in-law Tracey Brewer.
He loved his family, friends, and his church.
