Barbara Anne Stobaugh Gainer, 86, of Dallas, Texas died peacefully in her sleep on June 8,
2023 after battling Alzheimer's disease for nearly a decade.
Born on July 18, 1936 in Wichita Falls, Texas to Albert Mayes Stobaugh and Alice Pearl Meader
Stobaugh, she moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana where she graduated as valedictorian of her high
school class. She had a close relationship with both of her sisters, Margaret and Frances.
She returned to Texas to attend Texas Women's University where she completed her
undergraduate degree in Library Science. It was there that she met the love of her life, Irvin Lee
Gainer who was attending North Texas State University. Later in life, Barbara returned to Texas
Women's University where she completed her Master's degree in Library Science. She had a
lifelong love of Winnie the Pooh and chose this as her Master's thesis. She went on to work for
Dallas Independent School District as an elementary school librarian, a position she held for
over 30 years.
Barbara and Irvin were married on August 10, 1958 in Denton, Texas. They settled in Dallas
where they remained for over 60 years. They were very active in the Cockrell Hill United
Methodist Church community where Barbara taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She
also had an interest in politics and served as an election official in Dallas County.
Barbara and Irvin were avid travelers and visited places such as Alaska, Russia and many
national parks across the United States. They even drove from Dallas to Newfoundland,
Canada.
She is survived by her children, Julie Mosley and her husband Tom, Jenny Rhodes Smith and
her husband Bryan, Jerry Gainer and his wife Dana; Grandchildren Joseph Rhodes and his wife
Tiffany, Lauren Wilding and her husband Stewart, Alyssa Meyerdirk and her husband Michael,
Kaitlyn Gainer, and Allie Mosley; Great-grandchildren Trenton Magby, Darian Beeghly, Lisa
Hilliker, Aubrey Meyerdirk, Luke Meyerdirk and James Wilding.
She was preceded in death by her husband Irvin, and sisters Margaret and Frances.
Funeral services will take place on Monday June 12, 2023 at Jeter & Son Funeral Home, 4830
W Illinois Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75211. Visitation will be at 11am followed by the funeral service
at 12pm. Following the service, burial will take place at the Laurel Land Memorial Park in Dallas
at 2pm. Please send donations to the Alzheimer's Association or your local library in her
memory. Barbara had a deep love for Winnie the Pooh, teddy bears, acorns and books.

Department, and her dedicated Home Instead caregivers.
